  3. 1,500 white-collar rail jobs to go

  7. MORE than 1,500 white-collar workers are expected to be made redundant over the 
  8. next six months as part of the privatisation of British Rail.

  10. The cuts, due to be announced on Monday, bring to more than 16,000 the number of jobs 
  11. lost through the restructuring of British Rail over the past 18 months in preparation for privatisation.

  13. The latest cuts are all management and administrative staff with British Rail Infrastructure Services (BRIS), which carries out track and signal maintenance.

  15. They are the direct result of government demands that BRIS, which is to be split into 20 small companies prior to being sold off, demonstrates by the end of next March that it is ready for privatisation.

  17. British Rail said yesterday that it was still finalising details of the job losses but all were expected to be found from voluntary redundancies or natural wastage.

  19. The RMT union claimed the cuts were only the first stage of expected widespread redundancies among BRIS's 30,000 members.
